The Country's main industrial centers are:
Mesaieed (formerly called UmmSaid) about 45km south of Doha, where
Qatar steel Company, Qatar Fertiliser Company and a number of other
ventures for athe petrochemicals industry are located; the Salwa
industrial area on the outskirts of Doha, where there are a number of
small-scale industries including food processing and garment
manufacture, furniture and detrgent manufacture, as well as
auto-repair workshops and major servicing centers for a number of car
dealers; and Ras Laffan in the north east. Ras Laffan industrial City
was built to provide the infrastructure for the development of
Qatar's north Gas field, and whilst production and export of
condensates and liquefied natural gas(LNG) began in 1996, the City
was officially inaugrated in Oct 1999. The port with its long main
and lee breakwaters, provides one of the largest LNG exporting
terminals to the world.
